Introduction to the Samadhwani Student Internship Program:

Samadhwani Student Internship Program is a community-based research initiative for school and college students. It was launched by Samadhwani in 2025, a cultural collective working to preserve marginalized voices, indigenous knowledge, and village histories.

Under this program, students return to their own villages, towns, or neighbourhoods. They document their community’s history, culture, festivals, food, and daily life. Learning happens through fieldwork, not just classrooms. Students interview elders, artisans, farmers, women, and youth. They record photographs, audio, and video. They maintain field notes and prepare a written village biography.

Areas of research (you can choose your own topic)

Students may choose from a wide range of themes, including:

• Village culture and history
• Food history and local food traditions
• Cultural documentation: rituals, folk songs, crafts, oral traditions
• Urban culture and suburban culture: slums, urban centres, markets
• Cultural organizations, cultural centres, museums, and heritage sites
• Hills, sea, and streams, and the communities that live around them
• Climate and its effect on everyday life
• Traditional farming and seed knowledge
• Forest issues and community relationships with forests

Students are also free to research any other issue they care about in their community. The topic is their own choice.

This process builds practical skills in interviewing, oral history documentation, and report writing. Each completed internship adds to a growing archive of community histories. In this way, students help preserve India’s rural and urban heritage for future generations.

To participate in this internship program, you must first register your name. Send an email to the address below with your photograph and all the details requested. This is mandatory.

Submission of Work

Within two months of registration, participants must submit their thesis as a handwritten (scanned) copy and a PDF version, along with all videos, photographs, audio recordings (if any), and any other documents collected during the research, to samadhwani.culturaljournalism@gmail.com.

Submission Guidelines

> The thesis should be original and written by the student.

> It must include the student’s details, a clear village, town, or locality name (topic details), an introduction, main content, and a conclusion.

Relevant photographs, audio, video, or field notes must be submitted along with the thesis.
Note: Photographs should include the interviewer with all interviewees, the village’s natural scenery, important places in the village, water sources, hills, streams, and farmland during the farming season. All photographs and videos must be in landscape orientation.

> A personal experience note and a small video is compulsory. Share your experience of documenting your topic, including what you learned, the challenges you faced, and how the community responded. Create a small video within 2 minutes.

>Sources, if any, should be properly acknowledged.

> The document should be neatly formatted and proofread before submission.

> Priority will be given to a strong written document supported by proper video and photo documentation.

> A consent form signed by each interviewee must be included for publication purposes.

 

Research Thesis / Notebook Preparation

Each participant is required to prepare a research thesis or report on their topic. The work should reflect systematic documentation of the chosen topic.

After registration, participants must complete the questionnaire within eight weeks.

7. Content

The first page of the thesis/notebook should include the following:

• Geographical Introduction: Clearly mention the district, block, and nearby prominent locations of the village/ town.
• Historical Overview: Provide a brief account of the village’s history, or of any topic you choose, along with its background, in your introduction.
• Objectives of the Research: State the purpose and focus of the study.
• Experience Sharing (compulsory): Include a personal reflection and a short video in which you share your experience of documenting the topic. Describe what you learned, the difficulties you faced, memorable moments, and how people responded to your work
• Creative and Visual Elements: Include relevant photographs and attach all video documentation, as video is the priority for this internship. After video, include your notes, followed by drawings and literary compositions (such as poems or short stories) related to the topic.

 

Certification

Every participant who completes the internship will receive a certificate as a Student Historian from Samadhwani.      Publication: Outstanding documentation work will be published on www.samadhwani.com.

Credit: Published work will credit the student’s name, village or locality, and institution.

Internship letter: A letter confirming participation and duration, useful for students whose colleges require proof of internship.

Recommendation letter: Students who produce outstanding work may receive a recommendation letter, useful for applications to higher studies, journalism, or research.

1. Who is this internship meant for?
   This internship is open to all school and college students who are interested in community-based research, regardless of their subject or course.
2. What should we do first to join?

3. What can we research?
   You can choose your own topic. Some themes are village culture and history, food history, cultural documentation, urban and suburban culture, cultural organizations, museums and heritage sites, hills, sea and streams, climate, traditional farming, and forest issues. You are also free to research any other issue you care about in your community.
4. Where should we conduct the research?
   Ideally in your own village, town, or neighbourhood, or in the place connected to your chosen topic. Students who live away from their native place may conduct the work where they are currently living.
5. What if our village no longer exists or has become deserted?
   If any former residents of the village are still alive or living elsewhere, you may interview them and continue your work. If that is not possible, you may choose a topic in the place where you are currently living.
6. What are we expected to do during the internship?
   You have to meet people connected to your topic, discuss with them, and record their conversations in audio or video. Later, you should listen to these recordings and document what you learned in written form, as a research thesis.
7. Whom should we interview?
   Interview people who truly know your topic: elders, artisans, farmers, women, youth, cultural workers, traders, forest dwellers, or others, depending on your subject. Elderly men and women (normally above 60 years of age) are especially valuable for history and traditions.
8. What is the approach or methodology of this internship?
   Speak with people from different communities, backgrounds, and viewpoints. Simply asking questions within your own family and writing them down cannot become proper research. Remember, you are a researcher and a documenter. You are recording the history, culture, and knowledge of your community.
9. Is it compulsory to share our experience of the documentation?
   Yes. Every participant must share their experience of documenting the topic in both written and video form. The written note should describe what you learned, the challenges you faced, and how the community responded. The video should be a short personal recording in which you speak about your experience. Both are required parts of the submission, along with the thesis, photographs, videos, and consent forms.

11. Is a consent form necessary?
    Yes. You must take a signed consent form from every person you interview, and include it with your submission.
12. What should we submit after completing the work, and by when?
    Within two months of registration, send your research thesis in Word or Google Doc format, along with a PDF copy, to the email address provided.

Pay the registration fee of Rs 50/- and the course fee of Rs 500/- via bank or UPI scanner mentioned in the form, and keep a photo of the payment receipt. Filling out the registration form is mandatory.
